ADVOCACY

Education and Advocacy Coordinator

The LUSA Education and Advocacy Coordinator, has been employed to assist and provide advice to students who are having academic issues and other student related problems.

Some of the common issues the Education and Advocacy coordinator deals with are:

  • Academic
  • Tenancy
  • Employment
  • Ethical behaviour

If any of these issues are troubling you and you want some advice on where to go, we might be able to help.  The Education and Advocacy Coordinator’s Office has a list of organisations and helpful advice for the resolution of any problems or issues that you might have.

The Education and Advocacy Coordinator provides a confidential service.  He is friendly and knowledgeable about University procedures and policy, student issues and appropriate courses of action.

Education

If you don’t feel comfortable contacting a Lecturer or Class Rep, or are just unsure of your best course of action, come and see the Education Co-ordinator. They will be able to give you advice and support and assistance. Their assistance might involve informal or formal approaches to university staff on your behalf.

They can also give you advice and assistance and representation if you need to engage the University’s formal grievance procedures.

Advocacy

There are many problems or issues that you may experience for the first time as student away from home. These might include issues with flatting, banks or organisations like StudyLink or WINZ.  Alternatively, you might simply need advice or support in relation to issues or concerns that have arisen.

Student Representation and Class Reps

The Education and Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for administering the Class Reps system.  LUSA needs the Class Rep system because students associations are responsible for the representation of student needs and perspectives on campus. Since LUSA consists of a small elected executive, it can’t accurately represent the huge range of student interests at all levels, in all courses and facets of student life. By increasing the scope of representation to the “grass roots,” the Class Rep system helps to empower the wider student body. Class Reps are the front line.  They are the 'first link in the chain' of communication between students and the University. More about class reps.
