Handy Landys are a group of young, like-minded students keen to give back to our rural community in any way we can during times of stress and hardship. Based primarily in the Canterbury area, club members and university students enjoy getting back on farms and doing our bit for those needing a hand.
With a strong emphasis on strengthening the well-being of those in Rural Canterbury, we believe all farmers deserve to feel like they are not alone. We are hoping that we can be another support network for those who need it.
As a club, we complete a combination of day trips and overnight ones, where we go onto farms and do a few tasks at each individual farm depending on what needs attention. But most importantly, connecting and networking with the farmers is by far the most interesting and rewarding part of the trips. Last year we spent a majority of our time repairing fences, tree planting and doing other recovery efforts due to the Kaikoura earthquakes.
We are all about having fun and learning new things in a practical sense, so it doesn't matter if you have lots of farming experience or none at all, because there will be a job for everyone. It's always good to get away from the books and out with some friends, plus there will always be beers and snags at the end of a hard day's yakka out on the farms.
