The Lincoln University Recreation Society (or LURS to save yourself that tongue twister) is a club for students studying a degree that is sport and recreation related, and are interested in finding jobs, internships or volunteer experiences in the sector.
We also attend networking events in order to meet professionals working in the sector so that we can utilise their knowledge and connections with other industry professionals.
As students we are beginning to realise the importance of having practical experience on our CV’s in order to make us more attractive to potential employers when we are interviewing for jobs once we graduate. We all pitch in together in finding these opportunities and sharing them with other members, so that as many of us can gain as much hands-on work as possible.
Some examples of what we achieved in 2017 were having members undertake internships with Mainland Netball, Canterbury Cricket, Selwyn Sports Trust and the Christchurch City Council among others, as well as numerous paid and voluntary roles coaching young children in a variety of sports.
The majority of our current members study the Bachelor of Sport and Recreation Management and the Bachelor of Tourism Management, but we always look forward to welcoming new members who are looking to start a career in sport and recreation once we leave Lincoln.
